Startup Weekend Cebu 4, organized by and DOST-ICT Office and supported by Cebu Educational Development Foundation for IT (CEDF-IT), is aimed at generating breakthrough ideas from tech communities in the Visayas region.

Startup Weekend is a 54-hour competition where developers, designers, marketers, technopreneurs, and venture capitalists come together to share ideas, form teams, build products, and launch startup businesses.

The concept, which started in the U.S., is a global movement to empower young entrepreneurs to nurture their innovative ideas into becoming sustainable businesses.

The event gathers experts and practitioners from different fields of business to mentor the participants as they launch their concepts into business reality.

The whole event involves the participants in different stages of the business cycle including idea creation and business pitching, prototype development, mentorship and networking sessions until product or business presentation to possible investors and funders.

According to DOST Undersecretary and ICT Office executive director Louis Napoleon C. Casambre, the ICT Office has been moving forward in its new thrust to uplift the entrepreneurial spirit in the ICT industry, and in line with this, it is supporting Startup Weekend Cebu 4.

“The DOST - ICT Office believes that providing support in countryside entrepreneurial activities is an effective way in livening and expanding the local economy through ICT,” Ibrahim said. “Promotion of homegrown ICT products and businesses will not only provide employment in the countryside but also help develop innovative and creative solutions that can address not only the local but also the global market.”

Tina Amper, founder of, said the DOST - ICT Office has since been very supportive of their activities, which now includes a Startup Weekend in Bohol later this year.

Amper is serving as adviser/mentor to a new set of volunteer organizers who have stepped up to lead this year’s Startup Weekend. Entrepreneurs Rica Serenio and Ben Skelton will be leading SWCebu and SWBohol, respectively.

During Startup Weekend, participants get acquainted with one another starting on a Friday night. They pitch startup concepts they are passionate about, and form teams around the most popular ideas. They refine their ideas and business plans and start building product prototypes with the help of the onsite mentors, and then present what they have accomplished in a four-minute pitch and demo by Sundayevening.

Following the success of its inaugural staging in May 2012, Startup Weekend Cebu organizers successfully staged its second and third and now decided to hold its fourth leg in June due to the incessant demand of startup enthusiasts in the Visayas and Mindanao area again in partnership with DOST-ICT Office.

With the support of DOST - ICT Office, Amper said the 4th edition of Startup Weekend Cebu in June is again expected to be a resounding success, as well as the first Startup Weekend Bohol in Tagbilaran.

Intel, leading international fashion design house and curator Opening Ceremony*, luxury retailer Barneys New York*, and the Council of Fashion Designers of America* announce collaborations to explore and deliver smart wearable technology.

To kick-off the collaborations, Opening Ceremony and Intel will work together on the design and development of a smart bracelet based on Intel technology. Barneys New York will carry this device in their stores, being one of the first luxury retail outlets to carry wearable technologies.

Intel and the Council of Fashion Designers of America entered into a strategic collaboration to create a community for technology developers and fashion designers focused on wearable technology.

Intel Corporation, Barneys New York*, the Council of Fashion Designers of America* and Opening Ceremony* today announced strategic collaborations to explore and bring to market smart wearable technology, and to increase dialogue and cooperation between the fashion and technology industries.

“The collaborations we announced today are indicative of Intel’s collective and conscious approach to the wearable market,” said Ayse Ildeniz, vice president, Business Development and Strategy of Intel’s New Devices Group.
“Through these initiatives we will combine Intel’s leading technologies with Opening Ceremony’s design prowess, Barneys New York’s track record to identify the next consumer trends, and CFDA’s commitment to advance innovation within the fashion industry. Our shared vision is to accelerate wearable technology innovation and create products that both enhance peoples’ lives and are desirable to wear.”

As part of the collaborations, Intel and Opening Ceremony intend to collaborate in the design of a smart bracelet concept based on Intel technology with design direction from Opening Ceremony.

“Humberto and I have always allowed our curiosity to take us to uncharted waters. Since our early travels and shopping sprees in Asia, we've been keen on discovery,” said Carol Lim, co-owner of Opening Ceremony.

“This is an incredibly exciting and unique opportunity with Intel to bring our design vision to a wearable accessory that collides with Intel's state of the art innovation with fashion. We are diving in to embark on a journey with Intel and can’t wait to see where it will take us. Intel is a company that has powered our lives in countless ways and now we get to be a part of shaping the 21st century with them.”

People’s experiences with a product starts with a first glance at where and how it is presented in the stores. Regarded as the mecca for discerning fashionistas, Barneys New York’s museum-like approach to merchandizing provides a unique opportunity to showcase thoughtfully designed wearable technologies. Barneys New York will carry the smart bracelet engineered by Intel and designed by Opening Ceremony.

“One of the greatest opportunities for wearable technology as a concept to be successful is fairly simple - to design a beautiful accessory that our customers would desire,” said Daniella Vitale, COO of Barneys New York.

“It is exciting to be part of an elite group of brands to bring the reality of smart fashion to life. In collaboration with Intel, we are excited to announce that Barneys New York will be one of the first luxury retailers to merchandise a beautifully designed, smart accessory from Opening Ceremony.”

To scale the convergence of the two industries, Intel will work with CFDA to create a community for technology developers and fashion designers to network, match-make, cultivate and exchange ideas on wearable technology. The collaboration will connect more than 400 leading fashion designers who are members of CFDA with abroad ecosystem of hardware and software developers that Intel has been instrumental in building in the last 40 years.

“CFDA’s commitments are to drive innovation in the fashion industry and as we look at the power of technology and its influence on fashion, we believe technology will need to be part of the fashion industry’s DNA,” said Steven Kolb, CEO of CFDA.
“That’s why we are excited to announce a strategic collaboration with Intel on wearable technology in which we can bring together unique strengths of the two industries -- Intel, a company that delivers technological innovation across computing devices, and our designers, who design beautiful clothing and accessories that people want to wear. The two together will be a powerful combination.”
“The collaborations we announced today will merge the expertise of two very distinct disciplines of technology and fashion, essential in realizing the vision of prolific adoption of wearable technology,” added Ildeniz.

Awesome Cebu Startup: Citom partners with taxi-hailing app Micab

HAILING a taxi during the Christmas season has been a perennial problem in Metro Cebu.

To help the commuting public get easy access to a taxi ride this coming holiday season, the City Traffic Operations Management (CITOM) has decided partner with the mobile cab-hailing services of Micab.

The CITOM, to ensure the effective realization of its goal, will be handing out smartphones to taxicabs on Friday, supplementing the initial units that Micab has deployed for this pilot project.

Micab targets close to 1000 units deployed by end of the year in Cebu only. The project will expand fast to Davao, Iloilo, and Manila based on a franchise model to penetrate the market fast.

Micab aims 80-90 percent penetration of the taxi hailing service in the Philippines in the next couple of months.

The taxi-hailing smartphone app was launched in Cebu recently to assist the commuters in getting a cab hassle-free anytime and anywhere around the metropolitan area.

The Cebuano riding public will never have to wait in queues on taxi stands or even have to outsmart and outrun each other on the streets as they can simply use the Micab app by just tapping on their mobile phones to hail a cab to their location.

The app is just easy to use. People only need to download the app, key in some basic personal information and their self-description for recognition purposes.

With MiCab, a user can request for a taxi by just tapping on the app, which will then send a signal to available smartphone-equipped cabs within a 2-kilometer radius.
Taxi drivers equipped with smartphones are paying P30 a day for the mobile gadgets and data load credits.
For using the app, the passenger will only pay a minimal P5.00 charge on top of the taxi fare.

The Micab app was developed by the talented trio of Kenneth Baylosis, Keith Levi Lumanog, and Eddie Ybanez, who acquired the full backing of award-winning ICT company, Next IX, for their startup venture.

Seeing the potential in the Micab startup, Next IX chief executive officer and founder Bobby Suson has offered to support Baylosis, Lumanog, and Ybanez.

The MiCab app is only available for Android devices at the moment, but the three young developers said it will be available for iOS and Windows devices before the year ends.

What's Happens When You Gather 300 Geeks At Boracay

A Philippine start-up community road map is needed to push the Philippine economy forward faster.

This consensus began shaping up as some 300 Pinoy and international attendees participated in the two-day conference dubbed as Geeks on a Beach or #GOAB in the world-famous tourism destination in the Philippines, Boracay Island.

Held last Sept. 26-27, the conference themed “Bringing together tech innovators – from startups to global heroes” gathered an impressive lineup of 41 tech / startup experts as event speakers and the support of59 sponsors and partners.

In a roundtable discussion among stakeholders, deputy executive Director Mon Ibrahim of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Information and Communication Technology Office (ICTO) welcomed, among other recommendations, the crafting of a Philippine road map for startups.

Startups refer to fast-growing Internet-based businesses set up by entrepreneurs, something that began in the first startup community in Silicon Valley decades ago and spread globally through the years.

During the press conference that opened the #GOAB conference, Ibrahim revealed that government plans to generate 1.5 million direct employment for the Philippine IT industry. Of this figure, he said, 40% is planned to be generated outside of Manila.

Veteran startup entrepreneurs say that private sector initiative for growing the startup community should continue. Tina Amper of and prime mover of the #GOAB conference, for instance, initially funded efforts for startup gatherings from her own pocket.

Bowei Gai, a successful Silicon Valley entrepreneur, likewise said that venture capital is also not necessary at the beginning in order to develop startup communities. “Startups can self-fund and venture capital will just come.”

Gai, who just concluded a 29-country tour in nine months for his World Start-up Report, said the Philippines has a lot of potential as an emerging startup destination during his keynote talk during the second day of the conference.

Plug and Play co-founder Jojo Flores said that three years ago MIT funded 26,000 companies which hired 3 million employees and earned $2 trillion a year.

“This is the 11th largest economy of the world. That’s just a university. If the Philippines do this right, we can create startups . . . an industry of techno-preneurs on top of outsourcing. We still don’t have enough startups in the country yet.”

The young Cebuano Albert Padin who founded SpellDial said, startups are risky but if you’re afraid to take risks we’ll still be where we are exactly right now.

According to Earl Valencia, president of, “We have the next 5 years to prove that we are the epicenter of something – technology. If Sundance is for films, Davos for G8 leaders, then Philippines should be about startups.”

The loud call from the country’s emerging startup communities should be a signal for Philippine policymakers to move towards helping homegrown tech entrepreneurs become global champions rather than simply attracting foreign multinationals to invest in the country.

As of the moment, Ibrahim of DOST said his office has contributed funding to #GOAB. While his office has been responsible for making Philippines an outsourcing destination starting in 2005, “we believe the country is also about tech innovation.”

Organized by, powered by, public relations and event management by PRWorks, branding by, #GOAB is co-organized by DOST-ICTO and co-presented by SMART, SMART Bro, SMART Devnet, and

Other partners are Amazon Web Services as platinum sponsor, WaveMaker Labs as gold sponsor,, Ng Khai Development Corporation, LBC Express as the official logistics partner, Fineupgrades,, Boracay Pub Crawl, SPR Boracay Real Estate as silver sponsors, Airbnb as the official accommodation partner, Microsoft Philippines, Island Souvenirs, GTCosmetics Manufacturing and Megaworld as bronze sponsors.

Philippine Software Industry Association, National ICT Confederation of the Philippines, UP,, Game Developers Association of the Philippines, Digital Commerce Association of the Philippines, Brain Gain Network, DevCon, UVNS, and STAC-Silicon Valley are the event’s institutional partners.

#GOAB is also supported by Lenovo Mobile,, KuyiMobile, Plug and Play Tech Center, SHIFT, SeedAsia, Mynimo, Pinoy Great Deals, Crowdsourcing Week, Geek Speak, R & M Preserves, Malee, Lenddo and Lakwatsa Resto Lounge, along with Webgeek, Newsdesk Asia,,, Third Team Media, Panay News, Davao Bloggers Society, Vigattin Radio, Inno Pub Media, e27/SGEntrepreneurs, Rappler, Alcordo Advertising, Asian Journal Publications, Balik Bayan Magazine, and ABS-CBN as media partners.

Silvermont will be the foundation for a range of innovative products beginning to come to market later this year, and will also be manufactured using the company's leading-edge,22nm Tri-Gate SoC manufacturing process, which brings significant performance increases and improved energy efficiency.
“Silvermont is a leap forward and an entirely new technology foundation for the future that will address a broad range of products and market segments,” said Dadi Perlmutter, Intel executive vice president and chief product officer.
“Early sampling of our 22nm SoCs, including “Bay Trail” and “Avoton” is already garnering positive feedback from our customers. Going forward, we will accelerate future generations of this low-power microarchitecture on a yearly cadence.”
The Silvermont microarchitecture delivers industry-leading performance-per-watt efficiency.2The highly balanced design brings increased support for a wider dynamic range and seamlessly scales up and down in performance and power efficiency. On a variety of standard metrics, Silvermont also enables ~3x peak performance or the same performance at ~5x lower power over the current-generation Intel® Atom™ processor core.1

Silvermont: Next-Generation Microarchitecture

Intel’s Silvermont microarchitecture was designed and co-optimized with Intel’s 22nm SoC process using revolutionary 3-D Tri-gate transistors. By taking advantage of this industry-leading technology, Intel is able to provide a significant performance increase and improved energy efficiency.

Additional highlights of the Silvermont microarchitecture include:

  • A new out-of-order execution engine enables best-in-class, single-threaded performance.1
  • A new multi-core and system fabric architecture scalable up to eight cores and enabling greater performance for higher bandwidth, lower latency and more efficient out-of-order support for a more balanced and responsive system.
  • New IA instructions and technologies bringing enhanced performance, virtualization and security management capabilities to support a wide range of products. These instructions build on Intel’s existing support for 64-bit and the breadth of the IA software installed base.
  • Enhanced power management capabilities including a new intelligent burst technology, low- power C states and a wider dynamic range of operation taking advantage of Intel’s 3-D transistors. Intel®Burst Technology 2.0 support for single- and multi-core offers great responsiveness scaled for power efficiency.

Architecting Across a Spectrum of Computing

Silvermont will serve as the foundation for a breadth of 22nm products expected in market later this year. The performance-per-watt improvements with the new microarchitecture will enable a significant difference in performance and responsiveness for the compute devices built around these products.

Intel’s quad-core “Bay Trail” SoC is scheduled for holiday 2013 tablets and will more than double the compute performance capability of Intel’s current-generation tablet offering1. Due to the flexibility of Silvermont, variants of the “Bay Trail” platform will also be used in market segments including entry laptop and desktop computers in innovative form factors.

Negros Women for Tomorrow Foundation Inc. (NWTF), increases its aid to the homemakers by seeking the partnership of Kiva to some of its members. These women are trying to increase family income through setting up businesses in farming, raising hogs, feeding fowls, setting up stalls and selling different kinds of delicacies and on top that, building better homes, all the while exuding grace and joy as I have observed in their monthly meeting at their center; a genuine portrait of Pinoy optimism.

Loyal Globe patrons from Cebu City and its adjacent provinces recently displayed a show of force during the company's "Kamustahan," a series of customer caravans across the country as Globe’s way of updating them and showing its appreciation for their many years of patronage.

That's me showing my Globe smile. Lovin their awesome coverage all over the country for years now.

The Kamustahan was an opportunity for Globe to inform subscribers about the status of its network transformation, and about the improved customer experience that is to be expected from the new network.

“Rather than undertaking a mere business-as-usual capacity upgrade that costs much less, we decided to give customers the best network possible in the market,” said Mr. Cu, adding that

Mr Ernest Cu, toasting with his Cebu team who were big part in the growth of Globe for a very long time now. Event at the Marriot was a testament of their unwavering power, service and dedication to lead innovation and become a customers' champion.

LBC pilots TXT Remit service in Cebu

LBC Remit Express, one of the country’s key players in the remittance industry, is introducing TXT Remit, the company’s newest and most convenient product which will allow Filipinos to send and receive money at the speed of a text message.

To be launched first in Cebu, the breakthrough service bridges the challenges of geographical location when transferring and claiming remittances. With this service, customers can instantly send and receive money anytime, anywhere in the Philippines via SMS.

“With TXT Remit, our customers will enjoy an increased level of service in terms of convenience, speed and reliability. The remittance process is now easier and faster just like sending a text message.

"We chose Cebu to pilot the service because of its dynamic remittance environment which is smaller and easier to monitor. Eventually, we will expand the service to other areas in the Philippines,” says Achilles Reyes, VP of LBC Money.

The service improves the remittance experience of Filipino senders and recipients by taking advantage of their familiarity in text messaging and using stored value prepaid cards. For senders, they can send money securely anytime, anywhere with their mobile phone using a prepaid card, avoiding a trip to initiate a transaction. On the other hand, recipients can easily encash the amount received in any LBC branch nationwide.

To use LBC’s TXT Remit service, the sender simply needs to buy a prepaid card available in LBC branches and in accredited outlets and retailers in Cebu. The cards come in denominations of P500, P1000 and P1500 stored value.

Upon purchase, lightly scratch the back of the card to reveal the PIN which remitters can send via SMS using the syntax LBC<space>TRIPP<space><Your remit card no>/<your PIN> to 2910. The service will then promptly reply with a tracking number and PIN which the sender can forward to recipients so they can receive confirmation of the remitted amount.

In order to encash the remittance, the recipient must provide a valid ID and fill up an LBC encashment form along with the tracking number and PIN.

With TXT Remit, Filipinos in Cebu and soon, all over the Philippines – can experience faster and more convenient remittances through LBC branches nationwide.

ASUS Secret to Perfectly Engineered PCs and Tablets is YOU

What started as a motherboard manufacturer now becomes a top lifestyle brand with a line up of electronic devices that makes personal and work life so much easier and fun!

ASUS, the leading global brand in PCs and mobile among others, got its name from Pegasus of Greek mythology. And just like the winged horse, it has soared to become one of the pioneers in the industry today.

I am living testament to the power of their products as I am one of the proud owners of ASUS Google Nexus 7 and to tell you that it is worth all the hassles buying it from (all the way from the US when it first got out of the market), is an understatement. It has hypothetically never left my side except in the shower and it has aided me in my book reading, collaboration with my orgs, social networking and power surfing. Did I mention that NVidia Tegra has made my gaming experience top notch? So much to love about such a great product but it is another blog post to tell though.

Celebrating a great year for the company here in the Philippines, they flew their top dealers all over the country all the way here in sunny island of Cebu for a few days of nothing but beach fun and festivities.

Jervie of, Ram of and your truly,
Jaysee of pose with the  ASUS Padfone
which is not going to be available anytime soon in the country.
Yes, you are not delusional,
that's a connectable tablet and a smartphone in one!

We also got a close encounter to their latest line up of all-in-one PCs, mobile tablets, notebooks and ultrabooks and we could never be more delighted to know that such light devices contain SO much power that it should've been a fat PC in a parallel world.

What is notable on their products is the fact that is centered around user experience. From the unboxing up to its incorporation to your day to day living, they have thought of your needs and wants way ahead. In fact they have devised principles known as Customer Happiness 1.0 and 2.0 which discusses about the specifications of their devices in terms of fulfilling needs and meeting standards.

Even the sound when the turn your device on has been studied, where every corner and space counts, they have perfectly engineered every model to a particular market segment and it gives me chills to see how this was accounted for, in their series of presentation.

Their hardworking and brilliant people working behind the scenes propelled ASUS where it is today, positioned to be a brand to reckon with. Smart. Experience. Life. One thing I've learned that day, they don't sell gadgets. They sell the experience; a marketing buzzword that goes beyond what the numbers of their specifications and performance actually mean to real normal people like you and me.

A beautiful stolen shot care of my sizzie Chanel Imperial of

As it turns out, they are more geared towards the future.

ASUS wants you to live a life that is simple, easy and social.

They have introduced products that seamlessly connect with each other even with other branded Android devices. They want your data, your life per se, to be ubiquitous. Thus, they introduced cloud storage so you can access your photos, documents, videos and other files on the go. Plus they made it to a point to tailor fit the features to make your content easier to share to family, friends and to the world. They want you to live easy that is why their mobile devices has reached the top benchmarks in terms of responsiveness and they were never afraid to name the competitors included in their testing and I'm not here to burden you with technical results as their site could do that for you for validation purposes.

In their commitment to give you nothing but the best money could buy, ASUS and their line up of life savers are here to usher us to a new age of living life that way we should be.
